The Diva steps onto the stage to much audience anticipation. She delivers a powerful aria in perfect pitch. The audience applaud.
But who made the stage set? If you thought of Brundall Men’s Shed (BRMS), you would be right.
At the request of East Norfolk Operatic Society (ENOS), BRMS took on the task in a win-win for both. ENOS gained BRMS’ construction expertise whilst BRMS gained a meaningful project for several members whilst supporting an accomplished local society keeping our cultural heritage alive with their rendering of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Princess Ida at the Maddermarket in Norwich.
It started several months ago with a design outline that required a grand castle to be created that was transportable, easy to erect and as economical as possible.
Fortunately, BRMS’ Guy Douglas has considerable experience with stage design and set about detailing the components and laying the parts on his CAD system to ensure minimum material wastage. He passed the materials list to ENOS who were able to supply the timber for the job with some generous sponsorship from one of their many benefactors. They also supplied a well made but plain chair to become an imposing throne. Over the next few weeks, Guy, Terry, Julian and Ian made over 40 sqm of panels, a podium, rostrum, wall, a set of steps and of course the throne.
All were delivered to the Maddermarket on ‘get-in day’, the Sunday before the show was due to start. Guy, Julian and our Chairman Paul engaged with ENOS’ Robin Richardson and several of their members to transform the Maddermarket into a mediaeval castle fit for a king.
Guy and Julian committed to helping ENOS with the backstage during show week. After tech rehearsal on Monday, dress rehearsal on Tuesday, the show opened on Wednesday with shows on Thursday, Friday and two on Saturday.
Theatre critics (Noda) gave the show a very satisfying “best G&S I’ve ever seen” endorsement.
In summary, a successful collaboration between artistic expression and fulfilment of BRMS’ goals of social connections, sharing skills and knowledge and having fun to entertain the citizens of Norfolk.
ENOS extended their heartfelt thanks to BRMS for their support in making Princess Ida a great success.
Same again next year?
